High blood pressure is a common condition that affects more than a quarter of all adults in the UK. But, you could lower your risk of developing hypertension by adding certain exercises to your workout routine.
High blood pressure – which is also known as hypertension – puts extra stress on blood vessels and vital organs.
The condition could lead to some deadly complications, including strokes and heart attacks.
It could be caused by eating an unhealthy diet, or by not doing enough exercise.
But, if you do decide to do more exercise, you should avoid weight lifting if you already have hypertension, it’s been claimed.
Weight lifting can be dangerous for your blood pressure, if it isn’t controlled.
It could cause your blood pressure to spike, which subsequently raises your risk of a heart attack or stroke.
If you want to try weight lifting, you should speak to a doctor first, according to charity Blood Pressure UK.
Instead, consider adding more aerobic exercises to your workout plan, it added.

“Different kinds of exercise and activity have different effects on your body,” it said.
“If you have high blood pressure, you should try to focus on activities that will help your heart and blood vessels.
“Other forms of activity are less helpful. For example, you should not do any exercise that is very intensive for short periods of time, such as sprinting or weightlifting.
“These kinds of activities will quickly raise your blood pressure, and put unwanted strain on your heart and blood vessels.”

The best types of activities for people with high blood pressure are those that are repetitive and rhythmic, it added.
These types of exercises, which are known as aerobic activities, work all of the main muscle groups in the body.
Walking, jogging, swimming and dancing are all types of aerobic exercise.
Everyone should be aiming to do at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise every week.

High blood pressure is often known as ‘the silent killer’, because symptoms only tend to reveal themselves if you have extremely high blood pressure.
