Hair loss treatment: An oil from a fruit shown to stimulate hair growth

Hair loss can be an extremely frustrating occurrence.

What was once a steady growth suddenly has now stopped and one begins to notice either thinning out of the hair, patches of missing hair or complete loss and as such baldness.

There are more extreme ways to remedy this problem but often can be costly and could have dangerous side effects.

Turning to nature is always the best remedy for most health ailments and in particular a certain shrub which grows in Eastern Europe, the Middle East and western Asia could help with your hair growth.

Black seed oil is extracted from the seeds of Nigella sativa, a plant native to southwest Asia.

The black seeds are slightly bitter and sometimes used as a flavouring or spice in Middle Eastern and Indian cuisine.

The amber-hued oil is used in cooking and said to offer a range of health benefits, in particular a hair loss treatment.

As far as natural hair goes, black seed oil may help in growing certain thinning areas of one’s scalp and by massaging the oil into the head, it could help to grow hair.

Black seed oil contains thymoquinone which is a powerful antihistamine.

Antihistamines are often prescribed to patients with alopecia to help with hair regrowth and any thinning spots of hair.

The oil contains antioxidant properties which also help relieve inflammation.

Many advocates of the oil praise it’s ability as a hair loss treatment.

What the study says

In a study with Research Gate, black seed oil was analysed for its hair growth properties.

The study noted: “Nigella sativa seed is one of the spices, which is referred by Prophet Mohammed as a herb of blessing, which can cure everything other than death.

“Therapeutic potential of Nigella sativa seed has been very well studied by many researchers, but it’s use in cosmetic science is not very well studied.

“Nigella sativa seed is intensively studied for its chemical composition.

Advocates of black seed oil for hair suggests that these properties can help maintain scalp health by addressing issues including dandruff while keeping the scalp moisturized.

It’s been suggested by some that black seed oil helps by sealing in the moisture in individual hair shafts because it’s rich in fatty amino acids.

A 2014 study indicated that a mixture of coconut oil and black seed oil was effective enough in promoting hair growth to justify further study.
