The same study also showed hibiscus tea lead to a reduction in cholesterol and triglycerides.

Cholesterol and triglycerides are substances found in your blood that are also markers of heart disease.

General tips for weight loss

According to the NHS, there’s no single rule that applies to everyone, but to lose weight at a safe and sustainable rate of 0.5 to 1kg a week, most people are advised to reduce their energy intake by 600 calories a day.

“For most men, this will mean consuming no more than 1,900 calories a day, and for most women, no more than 1,400 calories a day,” explains the health site.

The best way to achieve this is to swap unhealthy and high-energy food choices – such as fast food, processed food and sugary drinks (including alcohol) – for healthier choices, it says.

In addition to reducing your calorie intake, it is important to engage in regular exercise.

Mayo Clinic explains: “When you’re active, your body uses more energy (calories). And when you burn more calories than you consume, you lose weight.”

For optimal weight loss, the health body recommends getting at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity a week, or a combination of moderate and vigorous activity.

“The guidelines suggest that you spread out this exercise during the course of a week,” it says.

What constitutes moderate-aerobic exercise?

Moderate aerobic exercise includes activities such as brisk walking, swimming and mowing the lawn.

Vigorous aerobic exercise includes activities such as running and aerobic dancing.

As the NHS points out, something is better than nothing, and doing just 10 minutes of exercise at a time is beneficial.
